Participatory Action Research

Participatory Action Research (PAR) has been part of Thailand’s academic and development practitioners’ circle for more than two decades. As far back as the early 1990s, Professor Robert Chambers, who developed this method, actually ran a PAR-PRA training workshop at Chiang Mai University for those who were keen to find a new way to bring local participation into the research process. Through an increased interest among development practitioners in searching for alternative research methods, PAR has found fertile ground in Thailand, as well as elsewhere, and has become a popular research method adopted by scholars and researchers across various disciplines, those which value data drawn directly from local people; the views from ‘below’.
